PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rare gas fluorescent lamp capable of increasing pressure for sealing xenon gas for stable illuminance, and capable of further increasing the light output. SOLUTION: The rare gas fluorescent lamp 10 comprises a glass tube 1 enclosing a rare gas including xenon gas in the inside, a pair of nearly band- shaped electrodes 2 and 2' disposed on the outer wall surface of the glass tube 1, extending in the axial direction of the glass tube 1, and a fluorescent material 3 applied to the inner wall surface of the glass tube 1. The electrodes 2 and 2' are nearly of the same size and are symmetrically disposed with the axis 0 of the glass tube 1 as the center of symmetry, and the area for forming one electrode 2 is 0.19 or less when the total area on the outer wall surface of the glass tube 1 on which the electrodes 2 and 2' are disposed is 1. At least 14 kPa of xenon gas is sealed in by the partial pressure. Further, at least 14 kPa of xenon gas is sealed in with the partial pressure, and the area of forming one electrode shall be in the range from 0.09 to 0.19 relative to the total area of the glass tube 1.
