Glycerol carbonate used for controlled gelling of aqueous alkali metal silicate solutions. Independent claims are included for: (1) a composition comprising an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution and glycerol carbonate; and (2) a method for controlled gelling of water-glass solutions, comprising adding 5-15 wt.% glycerol carbonate to a solution comprising 10-90 wt.% water-glass and 5-75 wt.% water.
