The device monitors the change in key position, rather than just the instantaneous key position. The antitheft system for a vehicle operates in conjunction with the ignition key (5) and steering lock fastened to the steering column (1). It includes several angular position sensor contacts to which different circuits or electrical appliances are connected. A sensor (14) is mounted within the lock to provide coded information indicating the angular position of the key within the lock. A decoder (15) is connected by a two-core wire (16,17) to determine the angular position from this information. A control module (18) is then arranged to control operation of appropriate circuits via intermediate power modules (19). The decoder takes account of the hysteresis in the movement of the device, with this effect being less significant in the direction on turning on the key than in the direction of turning off the key.
