An electrolytic coulometer which provides more than one timing or integrating function in a single cell includes two or more inner electrodes with inert materials on their surfaces arranged coaxially with respect to a hollow outer electrode carrying the active material, which is transferred during operation from the outer to both or either of the inner electrodes in response to a potential difference between the outer electrode and the appropriate inner electrode. In one arrangement, the outer electrode is formed as a silver can 10 into the mouth of which a first tubular inner electrode of gold 16 is sealed by appropriate inert and flexible plastics rings 20 and 22. A second inner electrode 30 is sealed inside the first. The electrolyte 14 is silver phosphate in phosphoric acid. The electrode leads 54, 60 are attached to the can and first inner electrode by crimping operations rather than by welding or soldering. Three inner electrodes may be provided, arranged concentrically with each other and extending from the open end of the can (Fig. 7). Alternatively the inner electrodes may extend from opposite ends of the can (Fig. 8). Two inner electrodes arranged as in Fig. 4 may extend from one end and one from the other (Fig. 10). |
