There is provided an elevator having a screw type lifting/lowering driving mechanism which causes no danger of breakage of a transmission belt driving a nut joined to a screw shaft and which is capable of minimizing noise and vibration. It comprises a cage (3) vertically movable among a predetermined shaft, a screw shaft (12) fixed to extend along the direction of movement of the cage (3), a nut (14) threadedly joined to the screw shaft (12), a hollow shaft motor (15) for driving the nut (14) for forward and backward rotation, wherein in the hollow shaft motor (15), its stator (17) is fixed to the cage (3) and its hollow rotor (18) has the screw shaft (12) received therein, the hollow rotor (18) being connected to the nut (14) for driving.
