A non-linear resistor comprises a sintered body 1 consisting essentially of zinc oxide and two electrodes 2, 3 applied to the surfaces of the body, one electrode making an ohmic and the other a non-ohmic contact with the body. The body contains from 90 to 99À95 mol per cent of zinc oxide and at least one oxide from the group consisting of iron oxide, aluminium oxide, bismuth oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt oxide, niobium oxide, tantalum oxide, zirconium oxide, tungsten oxide, cadmium oxide and chromium oxide. The electrodes are substantially of silver with small amounts of lead oxide, silicon dioxide and boron oxide, and may have traces of bismuth oxide, cadmium oxide and copper oxide. Alternatively the electrode making ohmic contact with the body may be an evaporated film of aluminium, zinc, tin or indium, an electrochemically plated film of silver, copper, nickel, zinc and tin, or a spray metallized film of copper, tin, zinc or aluminium. Wires 5 and 6 are connected to the electrodes. |
