A discharge lamp (12) including a pair of discharge filaments (F1, F2) comprises source supply terminals (T1, T2) for filaments each connected to one end of each filament, and a capacitor (13) connected between the other ends of the filaments. Upon lighting start, preheat current flows through the filaments (F1, F2) via the capacitor (13). They are connected to the source supply circuit (20) via the source supply terminals (T1, T2) with two wirings. AC bypass capacitors (C1, C2) for the respective filaments may be provided which bypass one end and the other end of each of the filaments (F1, F2). The capacitor is stored in the base (12a) of the discharge lamp (12), or in an adaptor, or in a socket.
