A special heat transfer medium as liquid, heated e.g. by fuel combustion burners, expands through a turbine to gas state, is condensed e.g. by air cooling, compressed e.g. by a centrifugal pump, and returned to heater. Shaft work is obtained from turbine which may be coaxial with pump and, pref. by magnetic coupling, and through reduction-gearing, with cooling air fan. About 40% efficiency can be attained by expanding medium adiabatically from 700 degrees C, 120 bars by factor about 3000 to 55 degrees C, 40 m bars using blend of 45% SiBr4 to 55% I2, in which heat is exchanged between components during expansion. To overcome corrosion problems with this and other recommended blended heat transfer media, internals esp. turbine, are ceramic and seal is maintained by magnetic transmission.
|
