1,206,079. Polymerizing cyclopentene. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 1 April, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 16899/69. Heading C3P. Cyclopentene polymers are obtained by (i) adding a reaction product of tungsten hexachloride and an alkali or alkine earth metal peroxide to a solution of cyclopentene in an inert solvent at above 0‹ C. or forming said reaction product in situ in said solution, (ii) leaving the mixture until it changes colour from blue - black to red, (iii) adding a Group I to III organometallic compound at -30‹ to + 30‹ C., and (iv) recovering the polymer after completion of the polymerization. The polymers obtained are mainly trans - polypentenamers. In examples cyclopentene is homopolymerized in the presence of WCl 6 /Al(i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 /BaO 2 or Na 2 O 2 . A copolymer of cyclopentene and dicyclopentadiene is characterized in terms of an infra-red spectrum. |
