The safety device includes means to prevent intrusion by especially the front wheels through the body section defining the footwell and comprises the front wheels (12,13) themselves and a unit interacting with them by which the front wheels are swung out from a normal position into protective position deviating from it. In the event of a front-end collision the front wheels effect a pivoting movement with their inner side in the direction of the engine compartment's rear bulkhead (8), especially to create a snowplough type position in relation to one another.
