The invention relates to a device for improving the stability of files which have a back, a top which is joined thereto by means of a first articulated area and a bottom arranged opposite the top of the file and which is joined to the back of the file by means of a second articulated area. The device comprises a fixing element which is fixed to or which can be fixed to the side of the top of the file facing away from the back of the file, in addition to a fixing element which is fixed to or which can be fixed to the side of the bottom facing away from the back of the file. The fixing elements are embodied in such a way that when they are fixed to the top or opposing bottom of the file they cooperate with one another when the file is closed, enabling the top and bottom of the file to be reciprocally closed. The invention also relates to a file of the above-mentioned variety, comprising a device which is made up of a fixing element which is fixed to the side of the top facing away from the back of the file and a fixing element which lies opposite said fixing element when the file is closed and which is secured to the bottom of the file. The fixing elements are embodied in such a way that they cooperate and reciprocally fix the top of the file and the bottom of the file at a distance corresponding to 0.9 to 1.1 times greater than the width of the back of the file when the file is closed.
