<p>An electric drive axle (32 - Figure 3) for use in hybrid vehicles has an electric motor (58) driving a compact gearbox (68). The gearbox includes a planetary reduction unit (70) and a differential (72). The planetary reduction unit has a sun gear (74) driven by the electric motor, and compound planet gears (80) supported from a planet carrier which have a first gear segment (88) meshed with the sun gear and a first ring gear (76) and a second gear segment (90) meshed with a second ring gear (78). The second ring gear drives the differential for transferring power to a pair of output shafts (110 and 118) adapted for connection to one set of wheels. The electric motor and gearbox are mounted in a common housing assembly (50) to provide a compact drive axle assembly.</p> |
