The apparatus includes a signal generator for generating an electrical pulse signal in accordance with one or more predetermined parameters for stimulating the muscle by inducing contractions in it. An electrode apparatus applies the signal to nerves associated with the muscle of the subject to be stimulated for stimulating the muscle. The predetermined parameters of the electrical pulse signal are selected to maximise the bulk of the muscle being subjected to the contractions so as to induce a shivering phenomenon in it. Independent claims are included for a method for stimulating a muscle of a subject.
