The method involves determining first channel pulse response or characteristic response property estimates for the subscriber in a reference cell and/or surrounding direct channel cells from an input vector with a priori transmitted pilot signals from all mobile radio subscribers in the reference cell and surrounding cells. A truncated total mid-amble matrix is generated with only columns of a total matrix for selected response sampling values. Independent claims are included for : (1) apparatus for determining a truncated total mid-amble matrix for a cellular radio system; (2) a computer program or element of a program for determining a truncated total mid-amble matrix for a cellular radio system; and (3) a computer-readable medium with stored program to accomplish the above.
