PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of relatively easily manufacturing an illumination optical system which emits nearly one kind of polarizing bundle of rays. SOLUTION: This illumination optical system has a light source device which emits convergent or divergent light, a rod-like translucent member for making the intra-surface intensity distribution of the light emitted from the light source device nearly uniform, a first lens system through which the bundle of rays emitted from the translucent member passes, a polarized light generating section which includes one polarized light separating member capable of separating the incident ray flux having no deflection to two kinds of the polarizing bundle of rays intersecting in the polarization direction orthogonal with each other and emits nearly one kind of the polarizing light bundle of rays having the prescribed polarization direction and a second lens system for making nearly one kind of the polarizing bundle of rays emitted from the polarized light generating section incident on a prescribed irradiation region. |
