A sensor device and method is disclosed for sensing a physical property, comprising:<BR> an elongate magneto-strictive member 2;<BR> a stimulus device 3, 4 for inducing a shock pulse or wave in the elongate magneto-strictive member 2;<BR> a sensing electrode 6 located in the proximity of the elongate magneto-strictive member 2 at a plurality of sensing locations along the length thereof such that the shock wave or pulse induced by the stimulus device 3, 4 generates a signal in the sensing electrode 6 at the plurality of sensing locations to generate a sequence of a plurality of time dependent signals in the sensing electrode 6;<BR> a support material for supporting the sensing electrode at a predetermined distance from the elongate magneto-strictive member, the support material being sensitive to the physical property to be measured such that a change of the physical property changes the signal generated in the sensing electrode 6 by the shock wave or pulse. |
