PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely and rapidly detect a through defect in a membrane. SOLUTION: This testing method for ammonia leakage is carried out on a membrane tank 10 having a tank 2 isolated from a cold-insulation layer 3 by the membrane 4, and comprises the filling of the layer 3 with a pressurized gas, the measuring of displacement 25 of the membrane 4, and the controlling of the filling amount of gas based on the displacement 25. By filling the insulation layer 3 with the pressurized gas, the amount of gas per filling is large, and no air comes into the layer 3 even if there is a defect connecting the layer 3 to the exterior. The determination of the filling amount of gas by the displacement 25 of the membrane 6 means that the pressure in the layer 3 or the flow of the gas can be more closely controlled and the membrane 6 is prevented from being destructed.
