In a diaphragm compressor having a diaphragm 2 oscillated by oil in a cylinder 5 containing a reciprocating piston 6, the oil oscillated by the piston 6 is heated by an electric element 9 in a tank 8 and a supply of this heated oil is also used to heat the cylinder 5. A pump 10 delivers oil from the tank 8 to an annular space 5a surrounding the cylinder 5 and cooled oil returns to the tank through a line 8b. Oil is supplied continuously to the space above the piston 6 from the tank 8 and surplus oil is returned to the tank through a pressure limiting valve 12. The motor (not shown) driving the piston 6 is prevented from operating if the oil temperature is below a predetermined value or if the pump 10 is inoperative. |
