PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an improved aqueous composition suitable for a coating. SOLUTION: This aqueous coating composition comprises an aqueous emulsion polymer. The polymer has a Tg from greater than 20 deg.C to 80 deg.C, is formed by the free radical polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated nonionic acrylic monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of 0.01-1.0 wt.%, by weight based on the total weight of the polymer, of a t-alkyl hydroperoxide, etc., [the t-alkyl group includes at least 5 carbon atoms] and, optionally, at least one other oxidant to give the aqueous coating composition.
