PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain a corresponding hydroxyaldehyde by oxidizing a diol having a methylol group at both the terminals and >=6 atoms bonded between the two methylol groups with oxygen. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing hydroxyaldehyde of the present invention is carried out by reacting a diol having a methylol group at both the terminals and >=6 atoms bonded between the two methylol groups with oxygen in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst to produce the corresponding hydroxyaldehyde. As the diol having a methylol group at both the terminals and >=6 atoms bonded between the two methylol groups, a linear aliphatic diol can be used.
