PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method of producing a mercapto group-terminated polymer excellent in heat resistance, light resistance, and weathering resistance, hereby mercapto groups can be introduced into the terminals of a polymer in a high yield, the rate of the mercapto groups introduced into a polymer and the rate of the functionalized terminal groups can be controlled, and also the molecular weight of the polymer and its molecular weight distribution can be controlled. SOLUTION: The mercapto group-terminated polymer is produced by radically polymerizing an unsaturated monomer in the presence of a thiocarbonylthio- structure-containing compound selected from the compounds of formulae (1) and (2) and treating the obtained polymer with a hindered amine compound such as a hindered amine light stabilizer(HALS).
