PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problems that, when artificial lightweight aggregate is fired in a rotary kiln, various troubles such as firing interruption due to fusion of pieces of the aggregate to each other or to the shell inner surface of the rotary kiln, which fusion is brought about by fine powder formed in the firing, are caused. SOLUTION: This artificial lightweight aggregate production process involves using a tunnel kiln 2 for a drying stage and a part or the whole of a sintering stage of raw material aggregate P, and using a rotary kiln 3 for the other part of the sintering stage and a foaming stage, or only the foaming stage, wherein, preferably, the drying and sintering of the raw material aggregate P in the tunnel kiln 2 are performed until drop impact strength of the resulting sintered aggregate reaches >=85%, or crushing load strength of the resulting sintered aggregate reaches >=10 kgf, and further, by performing this drying and sintering of the raw material aggregate P in the tunnel kiln 2 through utilization of a combustion gas exhausted from the rotary kiln 3, the production cost of the objective artificial lightweight aggregate can be reduced.
