PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide anα-olefin polymerization catalyst which gives anα-olefin polymer reduced in the content of an amorphous component and therefore having improved stereoregularity and to provide a method of polymerizing anα-olefin by using the same. SOLUTION: This catalyst is one prepared by combining (A) a solid catalyst component essentially consisting of magnesium, titanium, and a halogen with (B) an organoaluminum compound component, (C) a silicon compound component, and (D) an oxygen-containing organic compound component, wherein the heat of coordination of the oxygen-containing organic compound with a titanium tetrachloride molecule is 52.0-79.0 kcal/mol.
