PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new photochromic compound, to provide a method for producing the same, and to provide its application. SOLUTION: This photochromic compound comprises a spirocyclohexadiene compound expressed by the formula (I) (X is S, O or an alkyl-substituted nitrogen atom; R1 and R2 are each H, an alkyl, an alkoxy, amino, cyano, nitro, an aromatic group which may be substituted or a heterocyclic aromatic group, or jointly form an aromatic ring; R3 is an aromatic ring which may be substituted; and R4 and R5 jointly form an aliphatic ring consisting of a spiro- ring with respect to the cyclohexadiene ring, or are each an alkyl).
