PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To burn particulates by an optimal method corresponding to an operating state of an engine. SOLUTION: A gas oil feeder 8, an electric heater 10, an oxidation catalyst 12 and a particulate filter 14 are arranged in this order from an upstream side inside an engine exhaust passage. The oxidation catalyst converts NO inside exhaust gas into NO2 within a predetermined exhaust gas temperature range and the particulates are spontaneously burned by the NO2 . When exhaust gas temperature drops below the exhaust gas temperature range of the oxidation catalyst, the oxidation catalyst is heated by the electric heater or the like. |
