PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce frictional loss by improving the surface roughness of a sliding member of a valve mechanism at low cost and with high effectiveness, and improve the surface roughness as well as wear resistance without need for additional process. SOLUTION: A top surface 4 of a valve lifter 1 serving as a sliding surface relative to a cam outer periphery 12, a shim outer surface 8 of an outer shim 7 serving as the sliding surface relative to the cam outer periphery 12, and the cam outer periphery 12 serving as the sliding surface relative to them are finished to a flat smooth surface of which the surface roughness is <0.8μmRz with roughness property of micro-dimple, by means of precision shot peening.
