PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably carry out carbonization. SOLUTION: The carbonization apparatus is equipped with a combustion heat generation section 12 and a carbonization chamber 18 for receiving and carbonizing an untreated object, and at the downstream side of a heating chamber 21 installed around the carbonization chamber 18, a catalyst layer 23 and a discharge port 20 for a carbonization gas generated in the carbonization chamber 18 are installed. Thus, a combustible gas generated by the carbonization of the untreated object is exhausted without combusting it again. Since the untreated object is heated only by heat supplied from the outside, the object can be carbonized at a stable temperature. By causing an odor or combustibles to pass through the catalyst layer heated by the combustion gas of a burner, the reaction of residual oxygen with an unburned gas contained in the combustion gas is accelerated, enabling the combustion gas to be exhausted as an odorless harmless gas.
