PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 2,6-piperidinedione compound. SOLUTION: A 2,6-piperidinedione compound expressed by general formula (3) is produced by reacting a nitrile expressed by general formula (1) (R<1> is an alkoxycarbonyl, sulfonyl or an aryl; and R<2> is H, an alkyl or an aryl) with anα,β-unsaturated nitrile and water in the presence of an iridium catalyst.
