The present invention is directed to a process for improving a nickel catalyst used in hydrogenation reactions where said catalyst comprises contaminates selected from the group consisting of: oxides of nickel; organic materials; excess caustic; alumina fines; and mixtures thereof, which comprises: (1) washing said catalyst with at least one solvent to effect the removal of soluble contaminates; (2) reducing nickel oxides to nickel; and (3) mixtures thereof.
