PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet carrying mechanism in a paper sheet sorting machine, which can be miniaturized and is advantageous for ensuring an installation space. SOLUTION: This paper sheet carrying mechanism has a pair of belts 18, 19, which turn in a state that they are in surface contact with each other. Paper sheets are supplied between the belts 18, 19 by one sheet in a longitudinally erected position, in the direction different from the direction of the paper sheets pushed out from an accumulator 24 by about 90 degrees. A carrying passage is formed for carrying the paper sheets toward a sorting shelf of the accumulator 24 while holding the paper sheets between the belts 18, 19, and is formed in the shape of a loop turning in the vertical direction.
