[Also in Division F2] A differential gear for distributing drive between the axles of a motor vehicle and permitting overrun of either of two driven members 34, 36 comprises facially toothed clutches 57, 58 between a central driving element 24 fast with a driving shaft 45 and two driven elements 28, 29 splined, through a sleeve 33 and directly, to driven members 34, 36 and moved axially outwards, against springs 41, 42 to disengage either clutch when the corresponding driven member overruns, by inclined facial camming teeth 61, on the driven elements 28, 29 meshing similar teeth 62 on opposite faces of a freely rotatable but axially fixed outer cam ring 26, and hold-out rings 30, 31 carried by the driven elements cooperated with the cam ring 26 to maintain clutch disengagement whilst overrunning continues. The hold-out rings 30, 31 are connected to the driven elements 28, 29 by spring rings 32 which permit relative rotation whilst preventing relative axial movement therebetween. Axial projections 69 on the hold-out rings 30, 31 normally engage with limited circumferential movement in slots 71 in the central cam 26. When, on overrun, the driven element is cammed away from the driving element the projections 69 are moved axially out of the slots 71 and friction drag between the driven element and its corresponding hold-out ring rotates the projections 69 until they engage radial projections (66) on the driving element 24 whereupon the projections 69 are out of register with the slots 71 and abut the sides of the central cam 26 to prevent clutch re-engagement until overrun ceases and drags back the hold-out ring. The clutch teeth 57, 58 have sufficient circumferential clearance to permit the clutch disengaging movement. The driven member 34 is a shaft which drives the front axle whilst the driven member 36 is a gear driving through a parallel shaft (39) tandem rear axles (14, 15).</p> |
