A material for an organic luminous device, which comprises a 1,2,4-oxadiazole compound represented by formula (1) or a precursor thereof, or comprises a homopolymer or copolymer produced from monomers comprising at least one monomer unit derived from said 1,2,4-oxadiazole compound represented by formula (1):wherein R1 and R2 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkynyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group. Also disclosed is an organic luminous device containing the material.
