PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reaction apparatus for organic materials, etc., by supercritical water or subcritical water which can be industrially operated with high energy efficiency without the occurrence of clogging with wood flour in the state of uniformly distributing the organic materials, etc. SOLUTION: A reaction machine 12 consists of a cylinder 12a and a piston 12a disposed at this cylinder 12b. The reaction machine is constituted to compress steam by activating the piston 12b and to lower the temperature and pressure by activating the piston 12b in an opposite direction after the end of a chemical reaction. The water containing the resulted product is taken out of the cylinder 12a and the fresh steam is blown into the cylinder 12a, by which the reaction machine is periodically activated.
