PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fishing reel equipped with an ultrasonic sensor functioning to transmit ultrasonic wave onto the surface of a fishline reeled on a spool and receive the resulting reflected wave, thereby enabling occurrence of a backlash to be detected at early stages without always braking. SOLUTION: This fishing reel works as follows: ultrasonic pulses are transmitted by an ultrasonic sensor 3 onto the surface of a fishline 8 reeled on a spool 2 and the resulting reflected wave from the surface of the fishline 8; an arithmetic processor 11 receives as input signal the reflected wave received by the sensor 3, recognizing the waveform amplitude distribution of the input signal, and based on the change of the waveform amplitude distribution, the slack of the fishline 8 on the spool 2 can be detected.
