VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM

A system for controlling a speed of a vehicle having a continuously variab le transmission (CVT) and a cruise controller which controls the traveling spee d of the vehicle to a desired speed in response to the instruction to cruise control inputted by the vehicle operator. In the system, the detected throttle opening is smoothed or filter ed such that the speed ratio of the continuously variable transmission is controlled based on the smoothed throttle opening and the detected vehicle speed when the instruction to crui se control is input. Alternatively, a parameter indicative of upslope of the road where the vehic le climbs is determined and the speed ratio is controlled based on the parameter and the detected vehicle speed. With this, the system can reduce the engine speed fluctuation and can prevent the vehicle operator from feeling uneasy when the cruise control is effected.
