SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing an unsaturated fatty acid or its derivative by allowing a fatty acid or its derivative to act on microbial cell bodies of an unsaturated fatty acid-producing bacterium belonging to the genus Rhodococcus in the presence of a phosphate buffer solution of >=0.25 M in concentration and having a pH value of 7.2-9 or a phosphate buffer solution of >=0.3 M in concentration and having a pH value of 7.0-9.
