Cell contains a lower molten metal layer as cathode and an upper such layer as anode. A porous diaphragm is impregnated with molten electrolyte and is below and in contact with the anode. A layer of molten salt electrolyte is above the anode. Preferably the cathode and the lower face of the diaphragm are separated by a thin electrolyte layer. The diaphragm is a ceramic fibre felt. The electrolyte contains a metal which precipitates oxide ions. The anode is impure Pb or a Pb alloy, e.g. a binary Pb-Sb alloy, with pure Sb at the anode and pure Pb at the cathode. The anode may be waste from a Au-containing welding alloy; Au and alloy are recovered at anode and cathode respectively. Apparatus is described.
|
