The present invention relates to a portable fluid filtration system for filtering aqueous liquids, particularly water, that comprises a mechanism for providing an indication as to the number of times that the system has been used. Advantageously, the system may also provide a replaceable arrangement for purifying that can be replaced when the previous arrangement has reached the end of its useful life. In a desirable embodiment, the mechanism for providing an indication releases the arrangement for purifying after a predetermined number of times that approximates the useful life of the arrangement for purifying.
