PURPOSE: A handoff method for a supplemental channel when operating the TDM(Time Division Multiplexing) of the supplemental channel is provided to decrease the load of a system by performing a soft handoff operation as to only a fundamental channel among data transmission channels without performing the soft handoff operation as to the supplemental channel operated as the TDM. CONSTITUTION: In case that an MS(Mobile Station) of an IMT-2000(International Mobile Telecommunication) is moved from a sector currently assigned to the MS to an area overlapped with an adjacent other sector while the MS receives data from the currently assigned sector(401), a base station maintains the connection with the sector currently assigned to the MS and is added to the adjacent other sector in which an area is overlapped(402). The base station senses a signal transmission state of a data communication service as to the overlapped each sector in which a fundamental channel is assigned to the corresponding MS(403). The base station checks whether a sector in which a supplemental channel is assigned among the overlapped sectors exists(404). If the sector exists, the base station retrieves a sector which the best transmission state among the sectors assigned in the fundamental channel(405). If the sector with the best transmission state is not a sector in which the supplemental channel is currently assigned, the base station performs a drop process of the supplemental channel as to the sector the supplemental channel is currently assigned(406). The base station assigns the supplemental channel to the sector with the best transmission state and performs a handoff of the supplemental channel(407).
