IMPROVEMENTS IN STAPLE FIBRE CARPETS

A method of treating a carpet 10 formed from polymeric staple fibre yarn includes the step of forcing a gas 103 of elevated temperature through the carpet pile so as to cause a substantial portion of the protruding fibres 13 to shrink into the body of the fibre yarn. The carpet 10 is preferably transported on a conveyor 101 across the gas stream 103. A temperature sensor 106 monitors the temperature of the carpet pile after it has been subjected to the gas stream and data from the sensor 106 is fed to a controller 107 which controls the gas stream to keep the carpet temperature within a specified range. The treatment process is ideally suited to minimise the effects of fuzzing to enable loop pile carpets to be made using polymeric staple fibre yarn.
