1302659 Welding by fusion SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd 27 May 1971 [11 June 1970] 17575/71 Heading B3R [Also in Divisions B7 and E1] A corner connecting member for the welding connection of two box-section bars 1, 2 meeting at an angle, comprises two substantially triangular side portions 6 lying in parallel planes and each having two edges for welding, along 7, to the bars and a long edge 8, and a web 9, which connects with the two side portions at their long edges 8 and is extended at both its ends beyond the side portions by at least one tongue 10 having a longitudinal edge 11 lying generally in a plane midway between, and parallel to, the planes of the side portions, the tongues 10 providing for connection strengthening welding along the edges 12 between the connecting member and the bars. The connecting member may be an aluminium alloy casting or pressing. Two tongues 10 may be provided at both ends of the connecting member, a longitudinal slot between each pair of tongues being of sufficient width to accommodate a weld bead. The connecting member may be strengthened internally by transverse bars (not shown). The box-section bars to be connected may be aluminium alloy pillars and window sills and pillars and roof rails of a vehicle (e.g. bus) body. In the pillar/sill connection shown, the bars 1, 2 have flanges 4, and the connecting member side portion 6 are generally of the thickness of these flanges and are cut away to accommodate the weld beads at 7. The weld 9 and side portion edges 8 are part circular to match the normal vehicle window pane. The tongues 10 are preferably mutually offset and seat in the bar depressions between the flanges 4. |
