The invention relates to a system for detecting individuals or objects passing through an entrance-exit (4) of a defined space (2), consisting of: a detection device comprising emission means (8) used to emit different first and second electromagnetic signals (a, b) respectively in the first and second communication areas (A, B) which are spatially separated from one another and which partially overlap; portable electronic units (40) intended to be worn by said individuals or objects and comprising means for receiving the first and second electromagnetic signals; and means for detecting the direction of passage via said entrance-exit of an individual or object wearing a portable electronic unit. Each unit comprises amplitude measuring means which can be used to determine the reception amplitude of the first and second electromagnetic signals and means for comparing the reception amplitudes of the first and second electromagnetic signals in order to determine which of the two signals has the greatest amplitude.
