Anthraquinone is prepared by direct oxidation, in the gas phase, using oxygen, in the presence of a catalyst, of indanes of gen. formula:- (where R1, R2, and R3 may each be alkyl, R1 and/or R3 may be H) or diphenylmethane dervis. of gen formula:- (where R4, R5 and R6 may be same or diff., each being H or aliphatic rad.: the two R5 rads., and/or the R6 rads. may together form an oxo group, and/or R4 and R6 may together form an aliphatic rad. carrying a subst. methylene rad. or contg. at least 2 C's, or the two R5 rads. and one R6 rad., or 1 R5 and two R6 rads., or both R5 and both R6 rads. may together form an aliphatic residue. The reaction is effected in the presence of Vanadium cpds. and optionally in the additional presence of K, B, Th, Sb and/or Cs. cpds. |
