Process for controlling a metallurgical process comprises forming slag on a molten bath surface by using the speed of the slag formation and degradation as control parameters for adjusting the parameters inducing slag formation. An Independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a metallurgical process comprising units (11, 12) for determining the speed of the slag formation and degradation, and a unit (13) for adjusting the parameters inducing slag formation depending on the speed.
