An axial piston pump or motor comprises a cylinder barrel fixedly mounted on a rotating shaft, a plurality of cylindrical bores formed axially in the cylinder barrel, piston slidably fitted in the associated bores, a swashplate adjustably arranged at a desired inclination angle with respect to the axis of the shaft, slipper pads each engaged with an end of each piston and a retainer ring for keeping the slipper pads in contact with the swashplate.
