In a radial ply pneumatic tyre, wherein a filler 3 is positioned around each bead core 2 and the ends of the or each carcass ply 1 are turned up around the cores, reinforcement is provided in each bead region and comprises, for each region, two groups of strips 4, 5, each constituted by one or more strips of parallel cord fabric and one group being placed solely on the axially inner side of the bead region between the carcass ply or plies and filler 3, and the other group being placed solely axially outwardly of and side-by-side with the turn-up or turn-ups, the groups each extending radially from a point located at or in the vicinity of the radially innermost part of each bead core to a point in the respective, sidewall which is at a height equal to at least 1/6 of the maximum height h of the tyre section. In one embodiment, the one group consists of a single strip 4 which extends to 1/ 4 h and the other group consists of a single strip 5 which extends to <SP>1</SP>/ 5 h. Both strips are of parallel metal-cord fabric and their respective cords extend in opposite directions at angles of between 40 and 30 degrees, respectively, to the mid-circumferential plane.
