The actual vibrational property (FR) for an operating element like a motor vehicle steering wheel changes according to the type of contact between the user/driver and the wheel. This property is detected during operation and compared (32,42) with a nominal vibrational property (FR0) that is available for the operating element/the wheel under a defined condition. Results from the comparison then supply a message (48,52) like a warning or an alarm. Independent claims are also included for a computer program for carrying out the method of the present invention, for a control device to detect contact between a machine's operating element and a user, for a device for detecting such contact and for an operating element on a machine like a motor vehicle steering wheel.
