A shredder for garden refuse having a charging hopper, a rotatable, shaft mounted knife assembly (10,14,16) located inboard of the hopper, and a discharge outlet downstream of the knife. The knife assembly comprises at least two blades (14,16) located at different pitch circle radius, relative to the shaft axis (18). The knives are preferably square configured units, releasably mounted on the plane surface of rotating disk (10) and providing a projected cutting edge extending over most of the disk radius. The worn blades can be slackened of, rotated 30o, and re-tightened, up to three times before replacement of the blade is necessary.
