A wide field of view optical device comprising a first reflector (43) having reflective surfaces (42, 43) and a second retroflector (46) positioned relative to the first retroflector so that light (50) incident in an incident direction on the first retroflector is reflected by the first retroflector in a first reflected direction to the second retroflector and then is reflected by the second retroflector in a second reflected direction substantially parallel to the incident direction. The device further includes an objective lens assembly (62) positioned between the first and second reflective surfaces and an eyepiece lens assembly (64) adjacent the second reflective surface.
