<p>Low thermal expansion glasses alpha 65 x 10-7/degrees C) for lasers containing 1-8% Nd2O3 and based on two matrices (SiO2 - Al2O3 - Li2O) and (SiO2 - Al2O3 - MgO - CaO). The two general compositions in wt.% are:- (1) SiO2 54-80, Al2O3 4-34.5, CaO 0-5.5, ZnO 0-1.3, BaO 0-10.1, Li2O 3.9-5.5, Na2O 0-10, ZrO2 0-5, TiO2 0-1.8, Nd2O3 1-8; and (II) SiO2 54-80, Al2O3 4-20, MgO 4-10, CaO 0-5.5, Na2O 0-10, ZnO2 0-5, BaO 0-10, TiO2 0-1.8, Nd2O3 1-8. In compositions based on II the sum of MgO, CaO, BaO and Na2O is >19 wt.%. The glasses are used as laser rods for communications and have good thermal stress resistance permitting high power densities and long life.</p> |
